Can you really have fun in a balanced and sustainable way? Is it possible to balance healthy eating with a healthy social life?
The answer is, yes.
Read on to learn some handy tips for enjoying the best of both worlds.
Plan ahead
Have a think about the moments that you’d like to take a break from your habit temporarily. Have a think about what type of food would be a 10 on your satisfaction rating? What experience would a 10 be for you?
That way when you’re in that moment, you’re not making decisions on the fly impulsively, and when you break your habit you can think “ok that’s fine, I feel satisfied”, rather than looking back and wishing that you made a different choice. It’s all about planning ahead!
Don’t arrive starving
Continuing to consume balanced meals in the lead up to a social event is a great way to prevent yourself from arriving ravenous. Also if you know you won’t be getting much veggies at the social event for example, try get them in during the day.
Mindfully Eat
Eat slowly, make conversation, check in with your hunger and fullness cues and what is most enjoyable to you, and drink water as this will make you feel fuller and be mindful of what you’re eating.
Handle Peer Pressure
Prepare to communicate your boundaries – having a couple of phrases in mind that you can use can be helpful for reducing peer pressure Eg. “that looks so delicious, I’m just not really in the mood for it right now, but thank you for offering”.
Allow yourself to consume treats every day
When you tell yourself you’re not allowed something, these foods remain magnetising and exciting because they are always taken away again before you have a chance to become habituated. By incorporating your favourite foods into your diet every day or week you will be less inclined to go crazy in social situations and be able to enjoy your favourite foods in moderation.
Overall enjoy yourself! I know it’s easier said than done but just try be mindful and enjoy yourself, without going over board. Forget about perfection for one night – all you can do is try your best and get right back on track afterwards.
