5 Mindset Mistakes You May Be Making On Your Weight Loss Journey
Your mindset is very important when it comes to making healthy changes to your lifestyle, as it helps to make it sustainable long term and make you feel your best.
Here are some common mindset mistakes I see people make + my top tips for what to do instead.
Â
Being ‘all-in’ or ‘all-out’
Maybe you try to be âgoodâ when you’ve eaten something âbadâ; or you eat really well during the week but blow out on the weekend. Â
Being âall inâ where you make a lot of restrictions on the foods you can eat can feel motivating at the start, but itâs not sustainable in the long term. Because thereâs no balance, it will be harder to get back on track when you eventually ‘give in’ to what you want to eat after feeling so restricted.Â
Instead, practice balance by allowing yourself all your favourite foods throughout the week.Â
Â
Focusing more on what went wrong rather than what went wellÂ
Maybe you had an extra serving of dessert or skipped a workout. It happens to all of us, and it doesn’t mean you can’t reach your goals. Acknowledge it, accept it, and move on. The only thing you need to do to âfix itâ is get back on track with your healthy habits.Â
Itâs always good to think of what you can do better next time if things donât go as planned, but itâs just as important to focus on what youâre doing well. Celebrating your achievements will help you stay motivated.Â
Â
Making too many changes at onceÂ
“I need to drink 2L of water a day, exercise 3 times a week, cook balanced home-cooked meals everyday, get 8 hours of sleep a night”Â
There are a lot of things to consider when adopting a healthier lifestyle, so it can be easy to think you need to make a lot of changes at once which ends up being quite overwhelming.
Instead of adopting lots of habits at once, choose one or two to begin with and focus on sustaining them before taking on others. This could be making sure youâre eating a filling breakfast each day and focusing on drinking enough water.Â
Â
Focusing only on food and exercise rather than all aspects of a healthy lifestyle
Whatâs the first thing you do when you decide to lose weight? You focus on what youâre eating and how much youâre working out.
Food and exercise are definitely important parts of a healthy lifestyle, but there are so many other factors that contribute to you feeling better.
For example, making sure you have a consistent sleep schedule is important for giving you more energy, and reducing stress levels.Â
If you keep neglecting other critical aspects of weight loss, like your mindset, emotions, lifestyle requirements, habits, and energy levels, you will return pretty quickly to the place you started from.
Â
Not considering ways you can make it easier for yourselfÂ
With all the confusing health messages out there, some people get stuck with the mindset that a healthy lifestyle has to look a certain way, such as cooking all meals from scratch and paying for a gym membership. These things are great, but are not always sustainable and just arenât realistic for all lifestyles.
If you have less time, you can still eat healthy using things such as recipe bases, no-cook meals, and even pre-prepared foods. Doing a quick at-home workout while watching TV is still great for getting exercise in. Itâs important to find strategies that work for you and are realistic.Â
